Posting and commenting

I think anyone can sign in with a gmail account and password and make a comment to an existing post.  I'm not sure whether anyone but me can make a new post.  But anyone can comment on THIS post to ask for a new topic to be opened up, and I can make a new post to start that topic.  Not very elegant, but I'm taking baby steps.

a blog for Brown University faculty contemplating retirement or retired

This space is a project of the Committee on Faculty Retirement at Brown University.  Our intent is to provide a forum for questions and discussion concerning the process of retiring and life in retirement, where interested faculty can go beyond the information we have provided or linked to from the Committee's web pages at Brown.

For example, in the most recent committee meeting the issue of where to get financial advice came up.  Members knew that both TIAA-CREF and Fidelity will provide free personalized consultations, projecting how long a person's savings will last under different rates of withdrawal and different investment strategies.  However, some were interested in finding an independent, and there we did not have an answer.

Less practical matters are also welcome.  Many of us have no trouble filling our time, but one certainly hears of of people who don't have avocations and get depressed.  Perhaps this space could help us share the manifold ways we've found to enjoy life. For example, I have been taking lessons in drawing and watercolor, and I've joined the RI Philharmonic's Community Orchestra and play more chamber music than before retiring.

We look forward to hearing from our colleagues with questions - and with answers.
